Sundials seem to have dropped from favor in architecture and design circles. Is this because the craft of designing sundials that display real clock time has been lost to the ages?

“Not so!” says Dave Kreiner, President of Accurate Sundials, LLC and one of the few sundial makers left on our planet.

“Look at what the addition of an accurate sundial does to this modern library building in Freemont, Indiana.”

“This is a striking and unique, attention-getting vertical south sundial which displays real clock time. It is 4 feet square and mounted 40 feet up on the building. It can be read from over 200 feet away. Every patron must see it while walking up to the library. The comments received on the sundial (and library) have been outstanding.”

We asked Dave what it takes to lay out an accurate sundial design.

“The sundial must be designed for its specific latitude, longitude and time zone,” he replied. “To our knowledge, we are the only sundial designers in the world that build all these factors into the 172 calculations made as part of the design layout.”

Dave continued, “We can design horizontal sundials, vertical sundials and declining sundials of almost any size. One of our customers is building a 22-foot diameter horizontal sundial in Irving, Texas, as the centerpiece of a park, and you can bet it will display real clock time.”

Just how accurate can a sundial be?

“It can be accurate to the second if properly designed and set up,” Dave says, “subject to the Equation of Time, of course, which will make any stationary dial appear to be fast or slow by as much as 4 to 6 minutes from April through the middle of September. This difference can be charted and displayed to ensure to-the-second accuracy.”

“The selection of construction materials is very wide, too. A sundial can be made of metal, granite, cement or even Corian. The size is limited only by available space, and the style and graphics are limitless,” Dave finished. “We think you’re going to see a lot more sundials included in building and grounds designs now that we have revived the craft of designing accurate sundials.”
